"When an AC voltage is applied to an X7R MLCC—such as the AC ripple on a switching power supply output—the capacitor physically vibrates at the ripple frequency. If that frequency falls in the audible range (20 Hz–20 kHz), the PCB acts as a speaker diaphragm and the capacitor generates acoustic noise"*

Does anyone tried to use that effect on purpose, to make a capacitor based solid state speaker? I'd be curious to see that in action! #electronics

Just finished another piece in my series imagining the world after the singularity, when the line between humanity and technology has disappeared.

I drew the circuit board traces in KiCad and CNC machined them into a slab of walnut. Then I filled the traces with epoxy resin, machined out the back to form a hollow pocket, and added an LED backlight. Of course, it’s USB-C powered. ⚡

Well. A gloomy day and being let go is not a reason to skip #NakedDieFriday so without further ado!

Today's sample is SMM6037, a chip or rather assembly by Skyworks. I did not find a datasheet for this one, but it seems to be equivalent/related MMM6027 by Freescale. The chip itself came from an e-waste pile on a mangled board, which likely was a Motorola branded phone but impossible to tell which one.

I have a place where I want to control up to 4 steppers but in a modular fashion, i.e. it'll be some other machine using up to 4 motors on other days.

So I need a 16+ pin connector which is easy to plug in/out, ideally cheap because this is just a hobby project.

After some research, the "best" option seems to be USB-C at 19 pins (at ~1 EUR with breakout board for easy soldering), with the single downside that my room will contain a USB-C port actively regulated to push up to 2A at 24V.

How bad of an idea is this?

Analog RGB color look up table. Wire color corresponds to RGB channel (white for control). The blue things on the right are two banks of analog RGB colors, configured by dialing in resistance using those tiny screws. The switch in the middle controls the relays on the left, selecting either the top or bottom bank, which will light the RGBLED in the center. So you can dial in your two favorite colors and switch between them. #electronics

An old friend of mine has found a new, very excited owner.

I love using analog oscilloscopes. The controls are all physical and all right there. But. It is big and heavy and takes up a lot of space - even this one which is smaller than many.

Maybe it's time to get a cheap digital one eventually. Once I clean up and reorganize I'll give it some thought.

Low-key image of a Leader LS8105 oscilloscope with rather beautifully yellowed plastic trim. A probe is connected to the test point and the screen is showing a green square wave.
