In a humble effort to remove my dependency on _any_ search engine, I just found #emacs "webjump" which lets me store web bookmarks and open them in the browser. This was already absolutely what I was looking for, but webjump can even query you for a string and then open a search engine using that query. Wow!

getting sucked into the #emacs rabbit hole--writing my config from scratch. it's a really cool program, especially now that my Caps Lock key works as Esc on tap and Ctrl on hold. as far as packages, I have Ivy, Counsel, and Swiper. I thought dired/wdired would work more like vinegar.vim/oil.nvim, I'll have to look into its conventions more. navigation keybinds are pretty easy to get used to but I'll probably install the evil package at some point
