Our usual understanding of life

is dualistic, you and I, this and

that, good and bad. But actually

these discriminations are

themselves the awareness of the

universal existence. "You" means

to be aware of the universe in the

form of you, and "I" means to be

aware of it in the form of I. You

and I are just swinging doors.

This kind of understanding is

necessary. This should not even

be called understanding; it is

actually the true experience of

life through Zen practice.

Since your ego
is your enemy,
against whom
shall you fight?

Since your ego
itself is the protector,
whom shall you protect?

It is the very witness
of all you have done
and left undone.

When you have tamed
your ego, you shall be
liberated.

When the eagle soars up,
high above the earth, it's
shadow for the while is
nowhere to be seen.
Yet bird and shadow still are
linked. So too our actions.
When conditions come together,
their effects are clearly seen.
