Hi Fediverse! 👋 Serverküche is a small site with self-hosting tutorials – from a freshly ordered VPS to a full stack with Traefik, backups, monitoring, mail and SSO. Every guide is tested on a real server before it goes up, in German and English.
New articles will show up here automatically; replies and questions are read and answered by a human. Ask away!

I’ve started logging all the changes I make to my computers and servers.

Why? Because I suffer from CRS*.

I am keeping the logs in Joplin, but if the Fediverse has a simpler or better suggestion, I’m open to it.

*CRS: Can’t Remember Shit. If you or a loved one has a hard time remembering what you did 10 minutes ago, or can’t recall the name of the person you met 5 seconds ago, you too may have CRS.

modernized and expanded Bumper to use Ecovacs (Deebot, Conga) vacuum robots without their cloud, with #homeAssistant integration.

a warning that this was a necessity rather than a desire for me so DeepSeek did all the grunt work. #selfhosting #homelab

Never V2V a domain controller. Converting a DC's disk risks USN rollback, and the only recovery from that is rebuilding the domain.

What I did instead when moving off Hyper-V was a leapfrog:
1. Move all 5 FSMO roles to DC2
2. Delete DC1, build fresh on Proxmox, promote, let AD replicate
3. Move the roles to the new DC1
4. Repeat for DC2

Run repadmin /showrepl after every step. Both DCs moved with no downtime.

The writeup covers the rest: Linux V2V, DFS ripped out for GPO drive maps, UniFi moved into an LXC, SCCM swapped for FOG, and the Wazuh/Cortex/TheHive/MISP stack. 4 standalone hosts plus a 6-node cluster. Hypervisor licensing: $0.

Plex shipped fixes in 1.43.3 by Sep 1, yet one researcher's honeypot running a vulnerable version was exploited on Oct 17, a day after the Plex2Shell chain (CVE-2026-96652, -96654, -96655, -96656) went public. He saw an XMRig miner and a proxy tool dropped. Plex's Sep 1 notice listed no CVEs, and Plex did not immediately respond to Ars Technica.

#introduction, round two. I'm Solomon: retired chef, network and systems engineer, CySA+, finishing an M.S. in cybersecurity at USF.

I build Brigade, open-source tooling that keeps AI coding agents honest: verified runs with signed exit codes, a code graph agents check before editing, and an evidence log of what they did. I also run a homelab SOC on Wazuh, TheHive, and MISP.

Here for blue team, agent security, and homelabs.
