"A Fan-tastic Sign From Heaven"

October 20, 2026

An Anticrepuscular Rainbow Fan
* Credit & Copyright: Aurelia Degli Esposti

Explanation:
This is an unusual rainbow. For one thing, the rainbow is not complete, appearing only in a sunlit fan -- but that by itself is not very unusual. What is most unusual is the fake location of the Sun. The Sun appears to be toward the front, just below those hills -- but it is not. That is not how rainbows work. Rainbows involve a backward reflection from falling rain, so that the Sun must really be behind you. In this case, gaps between clouds near the setting Sun allowed rays to cross the entire sky and appear to converge in front, an unusual phenomenon called anticrepuscular rays. The photo was taken with a phone last week at sunset in Presenzano, Italy. The seemingly reverse rainbow was noticed when hanging up laundry.

Hills are seen in the distance below a partly cloudy sky. A group of orange rays appears to eminate from one area behind the hills. Across this fan of rays, near the top of the image, a short rainbow can be seen

As I wandered pensively along the shore in Busan, I noticed how the slowly receding water formed fleeting streaks and shapes around the pebbles. I stopped and watched for a while. The rhythm looked hypnotizing. Then I played around with the composition and the shutter speed to achieve the look I wanted. There's something timeless in those patterns.

black and white photo of the coast from some height. Many dark pebbles and white streaks of water slowly receding through them.

Hey #believeinfilm friends,

I got to review a new light meter app that has a false-colour exposure display, fine-tuning features, spot-metering, and a cinema shooting mode (shutter angle, iris, etc.). Can be quite helpful for slide film, ensuring soft lighting, or metering for filming video:

www.analog.cafePocketMeter Pro is a new light meter app with features for cinema and still film photographers. If you’re in the market for an advanced light-metering app, this could be the one. Created by Bill Manning of Studio C-41 & Atlanta Film Co, PocketMeter Pro comes with several features film producers often seek — but other apps lack. Perhaps the most interesting is the false-colour display (third image). #editorial

PixelfedChase Colors (@[email protected])Hey everyone, now that our recent "Blende 11" photo group exhibition in the town hall of Gersheim, Germany has wrapped up, I’ve got four printed photos sitting here. Rather than taking them out of their frames and packing them away in a dark drawer, I'd love for them to find a good home. I'm giving all four away right here on Pixelfed/Fediverse. To enter, just reply with a comment letting me know
