oh hai der #shingles the fucking thing is back in force, second time this year
never know if it's coming back or it's just "normal" neuralgia from previous encounters
don't have the courage to try to weather it without antivirals so there goes my week's earnings on the things
get yourself vaccinated, people!
why would I need different screen timeout settings for battery and docked, I mean the sheer audacity of the spoiled brat
y'all ever used another OS, where did you witness any of this as even remotely acceptable
had a soft spot for the thing, ran it for eons before switching to plasma, but this navel-gazing inventing a new paradigm whilst proudly sticking to the absence of just the basic-est stuff, I mean nevermore shall we meet
bye #gnome
the hyper-speed scroll is still there and can't be adjusted. this ain't a hardware issue if it's way to fast on *every* laptop I tried - macbooks, elitebook, thinkpad
are you for real #gnome I can't disable the "we bout to suspend soon" notification what the fuck? this is what I've been forcing on tech-illiterate people for years? I can't believe this shit is still there #plasma4lyfe
yes. that.
just to remind me of how awesome working on thinkpads is, here's a batch of #macbook pro A1502; 13-inch retinas of the 2015 vintage with the bog-standard 8 GB RAM, no storage and every, single, one has a bulging battery. and not only are they bulging, *every* cell is swollen! never had that before, usually it's only some of them. not that it makes any difference, they're all coming out
just to make working on the things more shitty, almost all of them got some stupid plastic protector shell that's fucking impossible to take off without breaking. tried it every which way, if one half does give and come off without cracks, the other half is like I ain't going nowhere what
nothing interesting to report here, after tons of alcohol and twisting and breaking all my expired debit cards, the things are out. grim chances on scoring good batteries for those, as well as magsafes; SSDs I got coupla. final flying ointment (h/t Chris Moltisanti, loyle to his capo), the 2015s got the unremovable staingate so they gotta go out as-is, all five of them
to finish the festivities, there's one 2013 model and one A1425 from 2012; those can get the staingate removed but they don't need it, go figure. the latter one had the then super-expensive 500 GB SSD and it didn't get snagged by the junkers because it was hidden away in a tray. slim chances on selling the thing as it fits only L2012/E2013 retinas; seem to remember those things burning undogly amounts of power

next up is a #thinkpad T490s. busted screen, no SSD, battery present. i5-8265u and the max 16 GB on-board. in the before times, soldered-on memory was a drag; nowadays with prices rising daily, having practically free RAM is neat. case is heavy on scratches and with the fucking stickers, madonn' takes as much time to get them off as does fixing the thing up
speaking of fixing it up, this thing needs a 40-pin narrow touch screen, with no mounting brackets, which are a) rare and b) expensive. the cable can be swapped out for a 30-pin so it can fit way cheaper panels, though. however, I already got the panel from the T14s and we'll see if it works
working on panels ova' here is a breeze -- cough fuckapple cough -- the thing can be opened with no tools to speak of and the panel isn't even screwed in, weak double-sided tape holds it in place
the T14s panel fits and the connector is also 40-pin. potential snag though, the sticker on the back of the panel says 30-pin, which it evidently isn't? this looks like an aftermarket unit, so this might be why touch didn't work on the T14s. no matter, I find touch useless anyway. and...
it lights up, no issues. verily, no touch is detected either by UEFI setup or in the OS so we good here. wouldn't even notice as I abhor the fucking things, but the trackpoint and its buttons ain't working. I feel enough people don't use the thing so it can be sold as is. short of one USB-A port everything else works, the battery is in excellent condition. quick boot with the borrowed RAM and SSD to test it and take some pictures for the ad and then take 'em out again

next's a #thinkpad T14s G1, i5 10th gen, no storage, on-board 16 gigs... are throwing insane amounts of memory errors. like, when memtest starts throwing out error regions it just goes on until the thing locks up, can't even turn it off with the power button. description was "bluescreens", so I assumed faulty RAM but was hoping I can use GRUB's BADRAM to exclude regions; doesn't look like that's happening here
as fixing up busted boards is way above my skillz, this thing will probably be just for parts, of which I identify two -- touch screen (touch supposedly not working?) and the battery (works, no swelling); possibly case, keyboard, etc

first one, hp #elitebook x360 830 with a 10th gen i7, one key looks slightly damaged and scuffs on the display cover, no issues wrt functionality
open it up-- holup, when did hp start using T5 screws?! they're still retention screws, praise the dark lord. case needed some finagling to pry open but it went okay. no RAM (single slot, booo!) or SSD, the battery is in there, looks OK. break out the only DDR4 RAM module and SSD I got, out of a #dumpsterdiving find and...
the thing is awesome. the display, a 13" IPS matte touch affair is beyond anything I've ever used, absolutely gorgeous. the 6-core/12-thread i7 that boosts to 4.7 GHz has got to be the fastest thing I ever ran. keyboard and touchpad fully operational and very nice, this thing would be a joy to use
not sold on the convertible thing though, find it awkward to hold it with the keyboard folded back and see no use case for it. does it come with a pen, could be cool for drawing and stuff...? gnome is way better with touch than it was just a few years ago but still nowhere near the fluidity and intuitiveness of Android and iOS
would totally keep this, but rent needs to get paid so I've put up an ad and hope for a quick resolution

RE: https://defcon.social/@yuman/117461794260545847
so I got a batch of busted laptops. various issues, price was right and even if the descriptions are off, very unlikely I'm gonna lose money. am presently a NINJA -- no income, no job so this should help, keeping busy, being productive, whatever. or so I'm told
so the plan is to #diy whatever #repair is needed and then try to offload them
will add to this thread when any one is done
