That is to say, at the moment I have exactly NINE cards left, though more are scheduled to arrive, perhaps in today's mail. All of us political veterans are somewhat shell-shocked and traumatized by various Elections From Hell over the past decade, so even though the auguries are generally good, none of us are relaxed. Buckle up, friends. "It's gonna be wild."

See you tomorrow.

At 8:23 I make a video, then ask Craige if he feels up to singing. We do a strong and well-focused rendition of "Underneath The Pines", then pack up our equipment and walk back to the intersection and head our separate ways. Today is full of students, with a rehearsal in the evening. And whatever resistance tasks I can do — I have almost run out of postcards!

I compose a few other patterns of various types before turning on the tabla at 8:01, with tempo set to 96 bpm (I try to vary the tempo by a few clicks in either direction to avoid getting entirely locked in to a particular speed). The past few days have improved my melodic flexibility in Khamaj along with my sense of syllabic placement inside the syncopated taal.

This morning I spend the most time on an expanding sequence: SR SN SRGR SNDNS / RG RS RGMG RSNSR / GM GR GMPM GRSRG etc. This has four internal accents and so will support the same number of text syllables as a bol-taan, and since the first line of "arre more saiyaan" has twelve syllables, it's a perfect match. So I move the text up and down as well.

As is the default for this week, I spend the first half-hour singing complex paltas both in open vowels and with text syllables distributed to mark the internal accents of the palta cells. Because directional changes from descent to ascent are more difficult to sing without muscular stiffness (for me, anyway), I compose patterns with this in mind.

There are some waves and smiles from the morning commute, although the overall level of response recently has been fairly subdued. If my own experience is any indication, everyone is really tired (each successive election is more of an energy sink). I wave back from time to time, but mostly shield my face from the wind with my sign and focus on music.

Man With Sign, October 21, 02026

I wake with the alarm and have a strong cup of coffee and the very first slices of bread from yesterday's baking before setting out to Roosevelt Circle, arriving at 7:31 and setting up. My hand-held message for today is the simple and direct WE MUST BE BETTER ANCESTORS. Craige continues out this week for health reasons. It's pleasant and cool, in the low 40s F.
