The bit that you skip #298: Stereophonics – Maybe Tomorrow

A massive single for the Welsh band on their fourth album, Maybe Tomorrow was one of the greatest hits of 2003. I certainly remember hearing it non-stop on BBC Radio Nottingham on that summer, which I spent working laboriously on my MSc project. My project was chelate-assisted phytoremediation of mine spoil polluted land. We tested citric acid and EDTA with maize plants, and see how effective they were at…

The bit that you skip #297: Phil Collins – Something Happened on the way to heaven

For the longest of time I swore this was a single in late 88, early 89. It's from 1990, that strange year of music that gave us pop rap via Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer. I'm always conflicted with this song. I love the horn intro, that clockwork snare intro and the slow swelling synth that elevates the song to a rarefied atmosphere.

The bit that you skip #296: Cameo – Candy

I'm a sucker for a song with a "weird" structure. You know the type. Something like Journey's Don't Stop Believing. All hook, interesting verse structure. Cameo's career has sadly been summarised by that stupid SNL skit with Word Up!, a song that is actually great, but now reduced to a meme. Candy is the superior song in Cameo's second act, saxophone included.

The bit that you skip #295: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark – So in love

For years, the instrumental of this song was the identity track for a local tv channel in Mexico. It was interwoven to many childhood memories, good and bad, and of sitting on a mustard coloured carpet, a small table where my notebook and pile of homework to solve, the afternoon cartoon line-up helping my concentration that would be 100% if it was a cartoon I hated, like The Flinstones.

The bit that you skip #293: Jackson Browne – Running on empty

Jackson Browne often gets paired with The Eagles due to his cowriting credits on Doolin Dalton, James Dean, and the utterly perfect Take it easy. No, really, that's what I believe it's the best song by The Eagles, no matter what you Lebowski quoting freaks repeat ad nauseaum. Jackson's own career is often overlooked, and it's a damn shame, as he's got quite a few hits.
