Inside the Standard Time Building, where the time zones started in order to solve a practical railroad problem. As the railroad covered greater geographical area and the schedule was used to prevent train collision, time differences along the way caused ambiguity in the schedule. Noon was when the sun is the highest in the sky. The time at the HQ of each railroad company was once used everywhere on tracks owned by the said company to avoid this ambiguity, but it caused confusion when transferring between lines operated by different companies. For example, Baltimore and Philadelphia differed by a few minutes. Time zones solved this problem. #chicago #architecture #neoclassical #photography #darktable
