Studying Economics I continue to be more and more shocked that models are 'better' because they are more representative of other models or better match them. Why aren't we (in tertiary education at least) teaching the benefits of models in relation to how closely they match reality and acknowledging risks of oversimplification.

Everyday I'm more shocked and horrified that modern (non frontier) economics plays such a large role in government and our lives when it seems so broken.

The argument that it's taught in later programs (if it even is) doesn't work because what drives policy decisions beyond just the experts? The politicians and media who if you're lucky have done an introductory Econ course that teaches out of date and possibly dangerous models if taken literally.

End of rant.
