#WordWeavers 30/10: What tiny detail about your world or a character will probably never matter to the plot, but you created it anyway?

Everything I've made up about the characters and setting is relevant to the story because characters and setting are story elements. If I've made something up it becomes part of my idea of the character/place which is what I'm thinking about when I make up the next bit. If you think about a place or a person you know, you're not reading an itemised list of features or attributes - you're thinking about your *idea* of that person or place, which includes everything. That's how I think about characters/settings/story. If I've made something up it's just there all the time as part of the whole, although of course with story people/places it's possible to decide to change things about them if the story isn't working. This is why I don't make up random things about characters in answer to hypothetical questions - I only make things up to serve the story.
