In today’s #3dprinting shenanigans, I installed the Prusa NFC adapter. Of course I immediately had to try it out on a NFC spool and it worked like a charm. Feels a bit magical though it is trivial.

Final bit was to replace my existing spool holder with the newer injection-molded model just so I could use something like this: https://www.printables.com/model/1846179-custom-spoolholder-cap-with-integrated-hygrometer or a silly design.

I use these fancy vacuum bags for storing my 3D printing filament. They came with a cute little USB-C vacuum pump that technically does its job. It just takes what feels like 10–15 minutes per bag.

So I bought an adapter for my Dyson vacuum cleaner. Does the same job in under 10 seconds. 😁

Apparently, the solution to filament storage was never about technology. It was just about adding more horsepower.

I needed a case for an IOT device I created. I tried a “chocolate brown” woodfill (top in photo) then tried a Notcua brown PLA and although both were fine they both caught a color cast in the intended location.

In a first for me I applied a “kona” stain to the woodfill print using a simple brush. Didn’t bother with any prep but it turned out great and just what I wanted. The only special step was to use a paper towel to dab up excess stain since it naturally doesn’t sink in much.

A solid week of 3D printer time later, forty two pieces of a custom stair railing are ready to be assembled with Gloop, dowels, and a furring strip down the center.

Why? Because the linear, angular stair railing currently in the L-shaped stairway up to my condo is boring, and I want a smooth curve!

#diy #3dprinting

A rectangular, clear plastic bin up on it's end with forty nearly identical biege plastic pieces with a rounded trapezoidal cross section, each with four holes - two on each side of a center groove. The pieces are numbered in hexadecimal. Two end caps, roughly the shape of a quarter of a very large bagel, are tucked into the corner.

If you like using Mainsail as your print host you will be able to do that with Marlin a lot more easily on the next update. The key is a little connector called Serial2Moon.

Soldered a battery connector to my esp32-c5 board today with a customized case that I modified with battery clips. The seeed has a built-in GPIO connection and voltage divider for reading the level. Had to peek at arduino sources to figure out the right attenuation level, seems to be working from esp-hal in rust. I want to show the battery level on the web pages and do a safe shutdown before the battery gets too depleted.

Still prototyping; I want to add a bigger antenna, SD card adapter and a GPS module. Placement is tricky!

Open case holding a 21700 li-ion battery and a tiny seeed studio esp32-c5 board. The top is yellow, holds the board, buttons and stick-on antenna, the bottom is pink and holds the battery. Still prototyping so I'm using whatever PETG I have lying around but it kind of has a strawberry mango ice cream kind of vibe.Side view of the strawberry mango web server. Customized an openscad design I found on thingiverse, it has functioning buttons that click the ones on the board.

Prusa have continued to breach their own GPLv3 license. I have written up details which include their reasoning, and why this matters, into a blogpost:

I had a problem. I used #3dPrinting to make a tool. I no longer had a problem!

These #shelly pro 1 relays were in a tight box and I wanted to make a wired connection to my switch. I couldn’t get the RJ45 plug to line up without messing with the other wiring.

So, I fired up #OpenSCAD, grabbed my calipers, and had a design in 15 minutes. 10 minutes of printing and my tool worked the first time.

The first cable w/o the tool? 15 minutes.
Cables 2-5? 15 minutes total.

Slide the connector into one end.Push it to the other end, it’s tight to the strain relief, allowing you to position the RJ45 accurately.Manipulate the cord as needed!

Interesting! I wonder if you could mount this on an axis of a 3d printer?

Most printers work on dead reckoning (is that the right term?): they find zero and assume their location based on motor rotation. That requires accurate motion systems, which is great… until it isn’t.

This type of system could open up all sorts of alternate motion systems because we’d have feedback on print head location as well as motion system correction.

If you regularly use a knife for #craft #3dprinting, #parcels .. whatever.. and always need a sharp blade you can pick up a #knife that holds a #60 #scalpel blade.

Just be sure to pick up the stainless steel blades (carbon steel is common).

Of course it goes without saying these are very, very sharp. The handle does not lock. Don't get one if you regularly cut yourself.

The size 60 blade are for autopsies.

I also have a size 23 handle, I picked up 100 blades for $15.

Reminder: #3dPrinting buildings is a scam and a grift.

It makes no sense: the part that is printed is the cheap/easy part. Once you figure in things like insulation and services, you’re left with an energy and space inefficient structure that costs loads.

Dude in the article talks about $220 sq/ft and says it’s comparable costs to the region. Thats true - home construction in that price range in FL but he is building a *fucking barn*.

Possibly a long shot but does anyone know how to remove the extruder from a Flashforge Adventurer 5M so I can fix the connectors for the front panel fan? I do not want to watch a 30 minute Youtube video, I just need to know what screws etc to disconnect, but everything online is a bloody video, which is not just annoying, it's really hard to see what's being done while someone's fiddling around with the stuff. #3Dprinter #flashforge #3dprinting
