"There needs to be an infrastructure first that allows them to leave without being instantly isolated."
That's the main idea of the Fediverse, you can switch servers (and server types) without losing access to the overall network or your followers or follows.
What is needed is for this kind of interoperability to become standard/mandatory. You can switch phone networks without being isolated, why not social networks?
@NatureMC @thisislieven @indivisibleteam @tchambers
It doesn't have to just be social networks, there are tools like @karrot which are intended for local activist groups to connect and organise.
And yes totally understand why groups would use every platform they can, but it's important that at least some of those options are non-corporate so that the door is open to escape corporations when they start behaving like Meta. (And to be fair to Indivisible they *are* on here too.)
Yes it's for real. Meta did restore the accounts several hours later, but all this happened on the day of the protests just when the accounts were most needed.
Meta publicly claims it was an accident but the timing is incredibly suspicious, especially in the context of Meta's support for Trump.

Exactly. If you rely on infrastructure owned by billionaires, they can squash you if you protest.
Hello Americans,
Today Meta has deactivated the Instagram accounts of the "No Kings" protests on the very day they are happening in the US. You can avoid Meta's fascist-defending shenanigans by following one of the main No Kings organisers on here instead:
This is a textbook example of why it's a bad idea to rely on billionaire-owned centralised social media.
