葡萄牙最高的山不在本土，在大西洋中间的亚速尔群岛：Pico 岛上的 Montanha do Pico，海拔 2351 米。本土最高点是 Serra da Estrela 的 Torre，1993 米，有公路一直修到顶上，开车就能到。
Pico 是一座火山，从周围的海底算起高约 3500 米。山顶 2250 米处有一个五百多米宽的火山口，口里又长出一个小火山锥 Piquinho，真正的最高点就在它上面，至今还有冒蒸汽的喷气孔。
1972 年这座山被划为保护区，是葡萄牙最早的一批保护区。岛上有记录的喷发一共四次，最近一次在 1720 年。
