This is a problem! 🧵

For now, I will no longer be uploading to the #Debian NEW queue. And yes, I will now go outside and do something nice instead of trying to argue on mailing lists about #LLM use in #FOSS. Maybe do the same. The weather is great outside. :) https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/202

Hey #Linux folks using laptops. I have installed #debian on an Apple MacBook circa 2015. When this thing ran MacOS, I could close the lid with a full battery and it would stay suspended for days at a time. Now that I'm running Linux on it, it runs the battery down in hours (less than 24) when I suspend.

What's the trick? I'm using KDE Plasma, if that matters.

Please don't give any suggestions that:

  • Suggest a different Linux distro. I'm not interested.
  • Suggest not using KDE. That's not the question.
  • Recommend something you've never tried on Debian/Ubuntu or one of those variants.

For the 32-bit variant of #wmlive, new Debian packages of the LTS kernel version 6.18.58 have been made available at https://wmlive.rumbero.org/repo/pool/main/l/linux-upstream , and the associated meta packages linux-{image,headers}-686 have also been provided at https://wmlive.rumbero.org/repo/pool/main/l/linux-686-meta-pkg .

Since wmlive is a compatible #Debian remix, these kernel packages can probably also be used on other 32-bit Debian/Trixie systems.

The joy of running #debian #unstable: upgraded after half a year and had to accept a few removals during the upgrade but nothing major... Restarted, no login screen anymore. Turned out GDM/Gnome shell needs weather location data and that package was not installed when installing gdm/gnome-core... And google shows only "autologin" and "dconf corrupted" related issues :-(

(And of course, when you finally know what the problem is, there is already a bugreport for it: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1151506 :-))

Inside PH4NTXM: #56 Browser Airlock

An optional, isolated workspace for Firefox and Tor Browser, designed to limit what a compromised browser can reach.

• Browse with an isolated filesystem and desktop.
• Import only the files you choose.
• Keep downloads in private RAM until you explicitly export them.
• Stop, review your downloads, and reopen the browser in the same private workspace.
• Preserve the generated Firefox identity and fonts in Linux and Windows modes.
• Use Tor Browser with its own privacy configuration in Lone Wolf mode.

Your regular browser remains available. Open PH4NTXM Browser Airlock from the PH4NTXM Apps menu whenever you want the additional isolation.

Isolation limits exposure. Exported downloads should still be treated as untrusted.

🎉 Happy Birthday, @ubuntu! 🐧🎂

In April 2004, Mark Shuttleworth invited a dozen @debian developers to his London flat where they discussed ideas and defined the key features of what would become #Ubuntu.

Today, Ubuntu, an #opensource operating system on #Linux, powers millions of PCs and laptops, as well as #servers, #IoT devices, robotic systems, and more around the world!

Mitigating CVE-2026-111943 on #Debian:

- sudo dpkg-reconfigure ca-certificates
- Select "ask" and deselect the following entries:
mozilla/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_C3.crt
mozilla/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_G3.crt
mozilla/emSign_Root_CA_-_C1.crt
mozilla/emSign_Root_CA_-_G1.crt
- Hit <Ok>

Alternatively you can edit /etc/ca-certificates.conf manually and add the specific entries:

!mozilla/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_C3.crt
!mozilla/emSign_ECC_Root_CA_-_G3.crt
!mozilla/emSign_Root_CA_-_C1.crt
!mozilla/emSign_Root_CA_-_G1.crt

...and sudo update-ca-certificates

I'm currently using an LLM to write an MCP server for DebOps, and it's going... not so great.

Don't get me wrong - the Python code that the tool generates is great, the service works, for me this is a godsend. I like programming, you know - just don't like doing the *actual programming* all that much. If an intern can write it, I'm fine.

But the documentation, oh boy... I get it, LLM probably needs some skill to write it, but I'll never get over that feeling of slopdocs while reading it. Fine, I'll do it myself then. Documentation is for humans, code is for machines.

But I struggle with writing documentation, sometimes a week goes by until I force myself to do it. And I was hoping that an LLM could automate that one thing for me, but no. It will have to be my responsibility to write it. And I refuse to release a feature without documentation, so it will probably take a few days.

But at least you will be able to talk to DebOps soon.

Inside PH4NTXM: #57 PH4NTXM Session Guard

Your session identity should stay consistent throughout your session.

Session Guard checks generated identity consistency and protection readiness every 10 seconds. If it detects a mismatch, a protection failure, or a monitored MAC change, it warns you and shows what changed.

Monitoring is optional. Enabling or disabling it requires your session password, and closing the window keeps monitoring running.

You stay in control. Review the findings and choose whether to enable Lockdown. Session Guard never activates it automatically.

@volkerdi happy birthday and strong health wishes. I have started with your distribution installed from pack of floppy discs which has been brought at #CVUT #CVUTFEL dormitories at #SiliconHill in 1993. We have used Slackware even for all our following instruments development at PiKRON. Lot done at #DOSBOX and #FreeDOS at that time when we used 8051 based MCUs with Intel DOS assembler tools as well as to run EDA tools. The latter, my colleague implemented PEDA and I have bought Motorola 68332 kit from my own savings and switched to own GCC cross-compiler build and participated in related BDM debugging project. So we could switch to native GNU/Linux tools. Following developed 68376 based MARS 8 systems serve to our students till today. We have never need to use #Microsoft #Windows (3, NT, …) for our embedded systems development and I have developed even Windows drivers (port of uLAN developed for Linux kernel the first) for unfortunate hostages of that systems on DDK under Wine for decades.

Linux ecosystems is too complex now, so we have switched to #Debian based distros, but #Slackware elegance and time when I have know and recognize may be all packages in my system have bright impress in my memory and I would use it for something with less dependencies again. Thanks again, Pavel.
