Excellent piece by Ezio Mauro in Italy’s La Repubblica comparing potential meeting & dynamic among Trump, Putin & Xi to Roosevelt, Churchill & Stalin in 1945.
“Today, however, the leaders of America, China, & Russia are united in their dismissive judgment of liberal democracy.”

There are, naturally, many parallels to be drawn, even within a completely different context: first, the presumption—shared by the three powers—that they could determine the fate of other nations, a hallmark of imperial logic; second, the fact that, once again, a Central European state—Ukraine today, just as Poland was in the past—has become the central knot that must be untied; third, Putin’s desire to extend the banner of Russian sovereignty as far as Moscow’s tanks can reach—much as Stalin onIn reality, however, superimposing these two historical moments is a dangerous optical illusion, as it overlooks several fundamentally important political differences. At Yalta, the goal was to provide a political framework for the forces unleashed by the war; today, by contrast, the aim is to establish raw force as the very expression of politics. While the military might of the victors certainly weighed on the decisions made in February 1945, the agreements included a commitment to hold democrAbove all, the "Big Three" were guided by the agreements reached at the Tehran summit two years earlier, which set democracy and freedom as their stated horizon: "All peoples have the right to choose the form of government under which they will live, and the common goal is to build a world order governed by law and dedicated to the interests of peace, security, freedom, and common prosperity." This vision was effectively denied by Moscow immediately following the Yalta Conference and throughout Should a three-way summit take place, it might potentially accelerate a resolution to Russia’s war of invasion in Ukraine, or perhaps facilitate a mediation by Putin in the ongoing, unresolved conflict between America and Iran. Yet, what we face is not a stabilizing triumvirate, but a subversive one. To resolve crises in other nations—crises often of their own making—without a negotiating table that includes the parties directly involved, constitutes an abuse of sovereignty and law. While this m

"The principles and strategies that over multiple generations have made the U.S. the world’s leading nation in effect are on the ballot, and these midterms mark a potential turning point.

Let’s focus on three pillars that explain the rise, strength and resilience of our nation -

1. Education
2. Immigration
3. The norms that govern our politics, economics and society."

All have been pulverized by Trump.

Another major scoop by the NYT -

"A Russian energy giant has secretly moved to acquire a position in a massive Alaska gas project. It's part of talks between Witkoff/Kushner and Putin to end the war in Ukraine. CEO of US company resigned after learning of Russian money in the project."

It's Kleptocracy all the way down.

NY Times' 6 month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records pinpoints the locations of the 71 coal plants, 71 chemical plants, 40 sterilizers, 19 steel-related facilities and 1 copper smelter exempted from clean-air regulations.

"The exemptions represent the biggest presidential intervention in enforcement of the Clean Air Act in the half-century since President Nixon signed the bedrock environmental law."

"In total, since taking office again, Mr. Trump exempted 202 facilities in 39 states and Puerto Rico from clean-air regulations that were going into effect. Some were among the country’s worst industrial polluters, including chemical manufacturers, copper smelters and coal-burning power plants. About 3.3 million people live within three miles of at least one affected facility."

So, in that sense, Dan J is not doing anything out of character for an AIP'er. Acting as a spoiler for the orthodox GOP has been the AIP's role as long as I've known them! I think a few Democratic governors can thank AIP candidates for their wins, but that's absolutely on the fringies, not the Ds!*

Today's articles suggest that Alaska's fairly recent adoption of ranked-choice voting** is what's changed, but they are undervaluing the other big change: MAGA.

There's no need for a right flank party in Alaska since MAGA captured the GOP. What I think is funny here is that Dan J's big sin isn't that he isn't RW enough, it's that Dan S is Trump loyal!

Help yourself to looking into some of the characters in the AIP history--ranging from colorful to terrifying.

*please take note of this lesson on the consequences of purity tests.

**I'm not a fan.

At their height of power, the AIP managed to capture Alaska's Governor's Mansion, but that's really overstating it. Wally Hickel was always a fairly vanilla Republican--more moderate than some, more of a jerk than many--and it always seemed to me that he had co-opted the AIP to facilitate a right-flank attack on the party and, running for re-election in 1994, he switched back to the GOP.*

I saw lots of examples of this when I was a journalist. Sour-grapes candidates who were behind in a primary switching to AIP to unfurl their RW flag. None of them talked about secession.

*I met Wally a couple of times.

For me, at least, I'm still confused that the Dan Sullivan who has been Alaska's senator is NOT the same guy as the Dan Sullivan who was mayor of Anchorage. Clearly, Alaska has too many Republicans named Dan Sullivan.

(Also, this is a coup.)

In the ballot, one Sullivan is clearly identified as Republican and the incumbent. How is this confusing when the two are clearly delineated on the ballot itself?

This is implausible.

So, (a) no proof of injury = no standing; (b) no power to intervene by Constitution; (c) does not even clear the bar on the major questions doctrine; (d) relies entirely on an expansive interpretation of statutes.

What this DoJ is betting on, is conservative SCOTUS playing Calvinball on its prior "principles".
