Minęło pół roku, odkąd 20 kwietnia odinstalowałem Facebooka, a chwilę później Messengera.

"they banned me for reverse engineering!"

pathetic that you could fine yourself in that situation, where the bobot company says no and you have to buy $30,000 of 4 video cards from a scalper working for the bobot circular finance company just to be about to continue doing something you either couldn't do at all before or used to be able to and have given up in favor of paying an extreme premium for a worse version of it that lets you be more lazy, uninteresting, and useless on your own.

In case you didn’t know, The 13th Warrior has a bit of real backstory:

Ahmad ibn Fadlan was a 10th-century Arabic scholar, legal expert, and diplomat from Baghdad. While Michael Crichton’s novel paints him as an exiled courtier fighting monsters, the real Ibn Fadlan was an elite religious advisor and secretary tasked with a massive geopolitically charged trek across Eurasia. [1] (https://human.libretexts.org/Courses/Saint_Mary's_College_(Notre_Dame_IN)/Humanistic_Studies/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan_and_the_Rus_(Vikings)), [2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan), [3] (https://merchantsofthecaliphate.com/ahmad-ibn-fadlan-the-diplomat-merchant-and-chronicler-of-new-worlds/), [4] (https://www.encyclopedia.com/science/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/ahmad-ibn-fadlan)
His surviving travelogue, the Risala, stands as one of the most vital, objective, and detailed eyewitness windows into the early medieval world. [1] (https://newlinesmag.com/essays/the-life-of-a-medieval-envoy-illuminates-forgotten-histories/), [2] (https://ethicsofsuicide.lib.utah.edu/selections/ibn-fadlan/), [3] (https://sacredfootsteps.com/2014/06/02/voyage-to-russia-a-10th-century-account/)

🏛️ The Real Mission (921–922 A.D.)

Ibn Fadlan did not leave Baghdad in disgrace. Instead, he was appointed by the Abbasid Caliph al-Muqtadir to serve as the chief religious official for a diplomatic embassy. [1] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfSbkaQWioQ), [2] (https://human.libretexts.org/Courses/Saint_Mary's_College_(Notre_Dame_IN)/Humanistic_Studies/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan_and_the_Rus_(Vikings))
• The Request: The king of the Volga Bulgars (located in modern-day Russia) had recently converted to Islam. He asked the Caliph for religious instruction and funding to build a fortress. [1] (https://human.libretexts.org/Courses/Saint_Mary's_College_(Notre_Dame_IN)/Humanistic_Studies/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan_and_the_Rus_(Vikings)), [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfSbkaQWioQ), [3] (https://newlinesmag.com/essays/the-life-of-a-medieval-envoy-illuminates-forgotten-histories/), [4] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QScrJrI-FZ4)
• The Motive: The fort was meant to defend the Bulgars against their fierce overlords, the Khazars. [1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan), [2] (https://newlinesmag.com/essays/the-life-of-a-medieval-envoy-illuminates-forgotten-histories/)
• The Team: Led by an ambassador named Susan al-Rassi, the caravan grew to include several thousand pack animals and travelers. Ibn Fadlan was responsible for explaining Islamic law and reading the Caliph's official decrees. [1] (https://muslimheritage.com/the-travels-of-ibn-fadlan/), [2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan), [3] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QScrJrI-FZ4), [4] (https://www.encyclopedia.com/science/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/ahmad-ibn-fadlan)

🗺️ The Epic Journey

To avoid hostile Khazar territory directly north of the Caucasus Mountains, the embassy took a massive, grueling detour through Central Asia. They traversed over 3,000 miles on foot and horseback over the course of 11 months. [1] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lE9HeT0M03E&t=6), [2] (https://www.libraryofarabicliterature.org/2021/exploring-with-ibn-fadlan/)
1. Departure: June A.D. 921 from Baghdad.
2. The Caravan Route: They marched through Iran (stopping in cities like Ray and Nishapur) to Bukhara, the seat of the Samanid Empire.
3. The Steppe: They braved freezing winter conditions while crossing the flat Eurasian steppe through the territory of various nomadic Turkic tribes (like the Oghuz and Bashkirs).
4. Arrival: May A.D. 922 at the Volga Bulgar capital. [1] (https://www.encyclopedia.com/science/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/ahmad-ibn-fadlan), [2] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lE9HeT0M03E&t=6), [3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan), [4] (https://blogs.dickinson.edu/mapping-middle-ages-2025/category/ibn-fadlan/), [5] (https://www.encyclopedia.com/science/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/ibn-fadlan-arab-among-vikings-russia)

🛡️ Encounter with the "Volga Vikings"

While staying along the Volga River, Ibn Fadlan encountered the Rus (Varangian Vikings of Swedish origin who had established trading outposts). His meticulous, non-judgmental descriptions of them are what made his manuscript legendary: [1] (https://ethicsofsuicide.lib.utah.edu/selections/ibn-fadlan/), [2] (https://www.libraryofarabicliterature.org/2021/exploring-with-ibn-fadlan/), [3] (https://sacredfootsteps.com/2014/06/02/voyage-to-russia-a-10th-century-account/), [4] (https://newlinesmag.com/essays/the-life-of-a-medieval-envoy-illuminates-forgotten-histories/)
• Physical Marvel: He described them as the most "perfect physical specimens" he had ever seen—tall as date palms, blond, and ruddy. He noted they were always armed with axes, swords, and knives. [1] (https://ethicsofsuicide.lib.utah.edu/selections/ibn-fadlan/)
• Hygiene Shock: As a refined man from cosmopolitan Baghdad, he was deeply repulsed by their lack of personal hygiene, noting that they did not wash after eating or using the restroom. [1] (https://sacredfootsteps.com/2014/06/02/voyage-to-russia-a-10th-century-account/), [2] (https://blogs.dickinson.edu/mapping-middle-ages-2025/category/ibn-fadlan/)
• The Ship Burial: Ibn Fadlan provided the only surviving eyewitness account of a Viking ship cremation. He recorded the elaborate ten-day ritual in vivid detail, including the heavy drinking, the sacrifice of animals, the ritualistic killing of a slave girl to accompany her master, and the ultimate burning of the longship. [1] (https://muslimheritage.com/the-travels-of-ibn-fadlan/), [2] (https://www.penguin.co.uk/authors/31426/ibn-fadlan), [3] (https://sacredfootsteps.com/2014/06/02/voyage-to-russia-a-10th-century-account/)

📜 How His Story Was Saved

Virtually nothing is known about what happened to Ibn Fadlan after he completed his mission and returned to Baghdad. For centuries, his Risala was considered lost, known only through brief quotations found in the works of later Arab geographers. [1] (https://archive.aramcoworld.com/issue/199906/among.the.norse.tribes-the.remarkable.account.of.ibn.fadlan.htm), [2] (https://human.libretexts.org/Courses/Saint_Mary's_College_(Notre_Dame_IN)/Humanistic_Studies/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan_and_the_Rus_(Vikings)), [3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahmad_ibn_Fadlan)
However, in 1923, the Bashkir scholar Zeki Velidi Togan discovered a nearly complete 10th-century copy of the manuscript tucked away in the Razawi Library in Mashhad, Iran. This massive discovery allowed modern historians to read Ibn Fadlan's exact path and observations, ultimately inspiring Michael Crichton decades later.
